This project began as the replacement of an aging deck but evolved into a comprehensive structural and aesthetic renovation of the home's outdoor living space. As with all of our projects, we worked hand in hand with local building inspectors throughout the construction process. Periodic inspections helped verify that every phase of the work met current building codes and standards, providing both peace of mind and confidence that the finished deck was built to last.
The original decking was removed, exposing framing that required reinforcement and modernization. To ensure long-term durability, existing beams were strengthened with additional 2x8’s, and existing joists were sistered where needed. Numerous new joist hangers were installed throughout the structure. The result is a stronger, more rigid framework designed to support decades of future use.
The completed deck encompasses approximately 640 square feet and features two primary deck levels connected by two distinct stair systems. One stairway was completely reframed and engineered with 16-inch treads and comfortable 6½-inch risers, creating an easy, natural walking experience that avoids the steep feel of many exterior staircases. The second stair system incorporates a wraparound design with integrated stair terminations that blend seamlessly into the surrounding landscape. Additional concrete work was completed where required to support the new construction and improve overall stability.
The finished structure features premium Trex composite decking throughout, providing the appearance of natural wood with minimal maintenance requirements. White PVC trim was installed on all fascia boards and stair risers, creating a crisp, finished appearance that complements the home's cedar shake exterior. Picture-frame detailing around deck surfaces and stair treads further elevates the craftsmanship and visual appeal of the project.
The result is a durable, low-maintenance outdoor living environment that combines structural integrity, comfortable accessibility, and architectural detail into a cohesive design built to serve the homeowners for many years to come.
